Love Your Enemies

8 December 2010

Loving your enemies has got to be one of the hardest commandments of the bible to actually live out. You may be thinking ‘ how can I love someone who has hurt me so much’ or ‘I cant love him/her he gets on my nerves too much’.  Jesus did it and he answers these questions in Matthew 5 vs 44 where it says,

‘love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.’

To love someone who has hurt you or even hates you is not easy, and to stop dis-liking your enemies will not happen over night, or in the next hour or so. It is a learning curve that takes a lot of time and effort, maybe months or years. But if you begin to bless those around you who are discriminating you then you will see great changes in yourself, your situations, and also the people around you. People will ask why and how you can be nice to some one who doesn’t even like you, and you can say ‘it is only with Gods help that I can’.

You will become an influence to the people around you, separating yourself from the people that gossip, hate and argue. Like the bible says, in Matthew 5 vs 46- 47,

‘ For if you love those who love you, what reward have you?  Do not even the tax collectors, do the same? And if you great your brothers only, what can you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?’

If we cannot learn to love our enemies then we are no different form the people who do not know Jesus.  God wants us to be a light that shines fro him, that shows how we love him and by loving our enemies we are able to do this. So remember it isn’t going to happen over night, but with prayer and time it can be done.
